For more than three decades, some of the biggest names in the international and Greek music scene have performed at Sani Hill. With more than 400 concerts and performances, a loyal audience returning to Halkidiki every summer, and a festival that has become a landmark of the country’s summer cultural calendar, Sani Festival continues to evolve. This year, the festival adds another first to its history, becoming the first music festival in Greece to receive ISO 20121 certification for sustainable event management from TÜV AUSTRIA Hellas.
The ISO 20121 certification concerns the system through which the festival is planned and implemented as a whole, setting specific requirements for reducing its environmental footprint, using resources more efficiently, ensuring accessibility and safety, and managing the event overall.
At Sani Festival, electricity comes exclusively from renewable sources through the Sani Energy Community and Sani’s photovoltaic installations. The resort is also the first energy-neutral hotel complex in Greece to operate on 100% renewable electricity, with its energy supply supported by Guarantees of Origin.
Visitors travel around the resort using electric vehicles, tickets are issued digitally, while single-use plastics have been eliminated and water is provided in Tetra Pak packaging. At the same time, responsible practices are applied for the management of materials and resources, alongside established procedures for safety and handling potential emergencies.
The certification comes at a time when sustainability is moving beyond individual initiatives towards the systematic management of major cultural events. For Sani Festival, this development therefore concerns not only the environmental footprint of a concert, but the entire chain behind the festival.
With the ISO 20121 certification, Sani Festival is now incorporating these practices into an internationally recognised standard for sustainable event management. It is a Greek first that places sustainability at the heart of the festival, without changing what brings thousands of people to Sani Hill every year: music, culture, and the vibrant connection between leading artists and their audiences.
