Olympiacos F.C. is working to sign West Ham United midfielder and Mexican captain Edson Alvarez, first reported by the Greek outlet Sportdog.gr and later confirmed by journalists Nikos Kotsis and Cesar Luis Merlo.
According to Merlo, Olympiacos offered 8 million euros to sign Alvarez permanently and immediately, although this offer has not been accepted so far, or at least has not been publicly reported.

Well, now Sky Sports joins this trend, and journalist Anthony Joseph confirmed that the Red and Whites have made a bid to sign the Hammers midfielder. However, Joseph reports a loan offer rather than a permanent transfer offer.
Joseph wrote, “Olympiacos have made a bid for West Ham defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez. It’s understood the Greek side want a loan deal for the Mexico international. Sky Sports revealed last week that Real Sociedad had made an approach for Alvarez, but there’s no bid from the LaLiga club since the initial contact with West Ham.”
Of course, there could be a loan offer with an option to buy, and perhaps that purchase option is the reported figure that Olympiacos offered for the Mexican. But that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Greek outlet Sport24 adds that this case will be closed very soon, for better or worse, as the Greek club wants to close the signing of Alvarez as soon as possible.

“The developments, positive or negative, will be immediate. As the Red and Whites want to close the deal as soon as possible,” Sport24’s Melting Cross wrote.
We previously reported at the Olympiacos Roundtable that Alvarez has already begun investigating what life is like in Greece, a positive sign that he is interested in continuing his career in Piraeus.
That said, another advantage Olympiacos was believed to have was offering a permanent transfer, which would please West Ham more than a loan. According to journalist Christian Vaquero, Thrylos’ proposal gave them a big advantage over Real Sociedad, the other club interested in Alvarez.
The cited report explains that the Spanish club insists on loaning out the Mexican midfielder, which West Ham does not want, as they prefer to sell him permanently rather than loan him out. But now Sky Sports says that the Red and Whites’ offer is also a loan.
Therefore, the best thing is to wait, since this saga does not seem likely to last long. It is not in any party’s interest to waste time, so we will see.
