    The word Pankration does not come from Παν + Κράτος, as some might think.
    The Παγκ- in Παγκράτιο means "total" or "absolute," similar to how it appears in words like Πάγκαλος (completely beautiful) or Παγκοίνως (known by all). It emphasizes completeness or totality. The -κρατιο part comes from Κρατέω, meaning "to hold power, to dominate, to control." It does not derive from Κράτος (which means "state" or "authority").
