A funeral service for Lakis Chalkias, one of Greece’s most influential interpreters of Greek traditional and folk music, was held at the First Cemetery of Athens. Chalkias passed on August 2, at the age of 82.
The morning of Thursday 6, August saw a large crowd gather at the Church of Saints Theodore to pay their final respects to the renowned singer.
Family members, friends and colleagues bid their farewell at the church before his body was placed in repose for members of the public to pay their respects.
The funeral service was held at public expense and in line with the family’s announcement, those wishing to honour his memory were invited to make a donation to the Greek Society for the Protection and Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons (ELEPAP) instead of sending funeral wreaths.
