Mary Linda, who passed away at the age of 90, was one of the most influential voices in Greek folk music.
With her distinctive voice and dynamic stage presence, she played a key role in transforming the genre by blending Manolis Chiotis’ bouzouki sound with Western influences such as mambo.
Throughout her career, she collaborated with some of Greece’s greatest composers, including Mikis Theodorakis, Vassilis Tsitsanis, and Manos Hadjidakis.
Born Maria Dimitropoulou, she made her stage debut at just seven years old. Her meeting with Manolis Chiotis in 1956 marked the beginning of both a great love story and one of the most iconic artistic partnerships in Greek music history. Together, they achieved remarkable success in Greece and abroad, while also appearing in numerous Greek films.

Her personal life was marked by hardship. After her divorce from Chiotis, she had a daughter during her second marriage, which she eventually left because of domestic abuse. In 1970, she suffered another devastating tragedy when her mother was murdered during a robbery. Despite these challenges, Mary Linda continued performing well into her later years, leaving behind an enduring musical legacy that shaped Greek popular music for generations.
