The Turkish-Greek Sports and Culture Festival has kicked off on the Greek island of Chios, bringing together basketball teams, musicians and tourism representatives from both sides of the Aegean to strengthen ties through sport and culture.
The event opened with a basketball tournament held at the island’s indoor sports hall, where four teams, two from Türkiye and two from Chios, came together to compete.
Representing Türkiye are Mavi Ege and Izmir Bulls, while local sides Vaol and Iones are taking part from the host island.
The tournament began with a match between Mavi Ege and Vaol and is scheduled to wrap up the following day with the remaining fixtures.
While the competition provides a structured sporting element, it also serves as a platform where participants from different generations and backgrounds can come together on the same court.
Music, culture extend festival beyond sport
Beyond basketball, the festival expands into cultural exchange through music.
As part of the program, the Izmir Rebetiko Choir, led by chef Berkan Atilgan, is set to perform, introducing audiences to a genre rooted in the shared musical traditions of the Aegean region.
Giorgos Mylonadis, head of the Chios-based association representing rental rooms, apartments and tourist residences, framed the festival as a joint effort aimed at building lasting ties between the island and Izmir.
He pointed out that tourism professionals, athletes and artists from both countries have come together with the shared goal of achieving a positive outcome through cooperation, underlining the importance of maintaining good relations and friendship.
Participants underline unifying power of sport
Representatives of participating teams also drew attention to the social dimension of the event.
Mavi Ege club president Can Atesler emphasized that sport naturally brings people together. He highlighted how individuals from different age groups can play side by side for a common goal, describing it as a unique and enjoyable experience.
Similarly, Vaol vice president George Paterakis expressed appreciation for all participants, noting that the matches offer an opportunity to demonstrate friendship once again and contribute to strengthening ties between the two sides.
