Astoria, NY – The Hellenic Film Society (HFS) is excited to announce its inaugural family programming event featuring Karagiozis: The Movie. Karagiozis, a beloved character from Greek shadow-puppet theatre, is renowned for his humor and satire. This film marks the debut of Greek animation in feature-length form and will be screened on Sunday, September 15 at 3 PM at the Museum of the Moving Image.
Karagiozis: The Movie is designed for school-age children, showcasing vibrant visuals and a story that is both entertaining and accessible. The film highlights how a positive outlook can help overcome challenges and promote a carefree attitude. It features a blend of traditional Greek melodies and original, uplifting songs. Directed by Akis Karras, Christos Leivaditis, and Ekaterini Papageorgiou, the film is presented in Greek with English subtitles.
Maria C. Miles, president of the Hellenic Film Society, shares, “We’ve been eager to include children’s films in our programming for some time, and we’re thrilled to introduce this family-friendly film that appeals to all ages. It celebrates Greek language and cinema, making it a wonderful way for families to start the new school year. It also serves as a great prelude to our New York Greek Film Expo next month.”
