Music from the Greek Underground

Open Studio are hosting an exploration of music from the Greek Underground of the 1930s and 1940s.

Con Kalamaras/Paul Karalis & Alex Petropoulos will take the stage, presenting a repertoire that embodies the essence of the Greek Underground scene.

Rebetika music emerged within the gritty urban landscape of Greece during the early 20th century, serving as a poignant reflection of the trials and tribulations faced by marginalised communities.

This musical genre, deeply rooted in the experiences of the urban poor, refugees, and outcasts, encapsulated themes of love, poverty, exile, and the harsh realities of city life.

However, due to its association with the clandestine world of the underground, rebetika was swiftly branded as illicit and subversive by the authorities of its time.

Despite obstacles, rebetika persevered, finding its audience in the shadowy confines of taverns and clandestine clubs where it echoed the voices of its creators.

A Historical Critique of Platonism

Dr Tim Themi will present a lecture entitled “A Historical Critique of Platonism: From Its Ancient Emergence to Its Postmodern Ideological Descendants” as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

This lecture promises to offer a deep dive into the lasting impact of Platonism, tracing its journey from its origins in the 4th century BC to its influence on contemporary philosophical and ideological frameworks.

Themi will explore Friedrich Nietzsche’s scathing critique of Platonism. Nietzsche famously condemned Plato as the source of Europe’s philosophical misfortunes, arguing that Plato’s metaphysical ideas have led to a trajectory of concealed nihilism and laid the groundwork for Christianity—an ideology Nietzsche believed only exacerbated the issues.

He will delve into Nietzsche’s complex arguments and examine how Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic theories, building on Freud’s work, offer insight into Nietzsche’s concerns.

The open to public lecture will also consider whether postmodernism effectively addresses or perpetuates these historical issues.

Where: Mezzanine Level, Greek Centre, 168 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne

Anthony Locascio – Pappou

Greek Italian rising comedian Anthony Locascio brings his show to Melbourne.

Pappou immigrated to Australia from Greece in the 1950’s, ferried over to become the top goalkeeper in Australian soccer.

This dream ended abruptly when Pappou’s fist had a chance encounter with a referee’s head.

In 2024, his grandson’s dream of being a stand-up comedian hangs in the balance, as he contends with the challenges of a modern man; staying off the vapes, raising kittens, and defeating the corruption of world football from the safety of a podcast microphone.

This show shall determine if Anthony is carrying on Pappou’s legacy by chasing his dream, or if he just should’ve become a doctor like his grandfather always wanted.
