What’s On August 31 to September 7: Never a week without some Greek

Book Launch: Anna Dimitrious’s Reading Greek Australian Literature Through the Paramythi

Reading Greek Australian Literature through the Paramythi is a book by Dr Anna Dimitriou that explores Greek Australian literature through its paramythic tropes and focuses on reading it as a bridge between multiculturalism and world literature.

The works that draw from paramythic forms and tropes draw from its symbolic power and its performative function, and often use it subversively to speak the unspeakable. They often merge incommensurate forms and include foreign words and registers or dialects, which lead to the need for translation.

When the paramythic voice, forms and tropes are located, translated, compared and interpreted in works by Australian writers having a Greek heritage, we have a new way to read Australian literature.

Dr Andonis Piperoglou from the University of Melbourne will be speaking at this event.

When: Tuesday September 3, 6pm-8pm

Where: Greek Centre, Mezzanine, Mezzanine Level, 168 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne 3000

ADI Policy Forum – Immigration and refugee policies at the crossroad: perspectives from Australia and Greece

Mass migration and people displacement has caused strains on many nation’s political and social structures. At times this has caused unrest with the host nation’s citizens fearing economic disadvantage which in turn has led to heightened tension.

Greece being a gateway into Europe is dealing with increasing number of refugees and migrants, putting pressure on the nation’s capacity to settle people into their homeland, whether it be for the long term or temporary. Australia on the other hand has traditionally employed a controlled migration but the increasing number of people who want to migrate here as either migrants or refugees has been a point of contention for some time.

How does Australia and Greece deal with the influx of people – whether refugees or accepted migrants – in their society and manage the general populations sentiments towards them. Hear experts discuss this current yet complicated matter as they share perspectives on both Australia and Greece’s handling of the situation.

Speakers include Karen Farquharson, Ioannis E. Kotoulas and Fethi Mansouri.

Music from the Greek Underground

Open Studio are hosting an exploration of music from the Greek Underground of the 1930s and 1940s.

Con Kalamaras/Paul Karalis & Alex Petropoulos will take the stage, presenting a repertoire that embodies the essence of the Greek Underground scene.

Rebetika music emerged within the gritty urban landscape of Greece during the early 20th century, serving as a poignant reflection of the trials and tribulations faced by marginalised communities.

This musical genre, deeply rooted in the experiences of the urban poor, refugees, and outcasts, encapsulated themes of love, poverty, exile, and the harsh realities of city life.

However, due to its association with the clandestine world of the underground, rebetika was swiftly branded as illicit and subversive by the authorities of its time.

Despite obstacles, rebetika persevered, finding its audience in the shadowy confines of taverns and clandestine clubs where it echoed the voices of its creators.

Tickets selling out.

When: Friday September 13, 9pm-11pm

Where: Open Studio Bar, 204 High St, Northcote VIC 3070

This show shall determine if Anthony is carrying on Pappou’s legacy by chasing his dream, or if he just should’ve become a doctor like his grandfather always wanted.
