On Apr. 26, Lip Jam transformed Sonoma State’s Greek life into a live-action Disney Channel Original movie in the Green Music Center.
Lip Jam is an annual lip-sync competition put on by the Delta Rho Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta in support of their philanthropic focus of fighting hunger. The Alpha Gamma Delta foundation partners with Meals on Wheels and Feeding America. “While we’re here to have fun, we’re also here to make a difference,” said one of the Lip Jam coordinators.
A total of 12 groups participated in the competition and lip-synced to different Disney Channel Original Movie soundtracks. The groups practiced their performances, including lip-syncing and choreography, for months beforehand. Eight of the groups were Greek organizations, sororities, and fraternities, and competed to win the titles for Best Sorority, Best Fraternity, People’s Choice Award, and the FSL Award.
The night began with a powerful opening song, “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” by Selena Gomez and The Scene, with the new members of Alpha Gamma Delta performing “Another Cinderella Story”. Sonoma State’s dance team, the Sapphires, made a special appearance as surprise guest performers mid-way through the night with choreography along with the soundtrack of “Radio Rebel”.
The final performance of the night was an emotional sendoff with the Alpha Gamma Delta seniors performing “High School Musical 3” in graduation gowns. The audience cheered when President Spagna joined in on the fun by “crashing” their performance and dancing on the stage with the seniors.
At the end of the night, the competing Greek organizations lined up along the stage for the announcements of the award winners. The first award was the FSL Award, presented by Abbie Page, the fraternity and sorority life coordinator, and awarded to Gamma Phi Beta. The second award was the People’s Choice Award, which went to the Greek organization that raised the most money throughout the night. Alpha Delta Pi was given the award after raising an outstanding amount of $1,259. The third award was the Best Sorority Award and was given to Gamma Phi Beta for their performance of “Hannah Montana”. The fourth award was the Best Fraternity Award and was given to Epsilon Sigma Rho for their performance of Cheetah Girls.
By blending humor, choreography, and philanthropy, Lip Jam demonstrated the power of coming together to serve our community and fight food insecurity.
