‘Untamed Voices’ to bring rebetiko to Sydney stage – The Greek Herald

The Greek Festival of Sydney will present Untamed Voices on Sunday, April 19, 2026, a powerful live music experience that brings the soul of rebetiko to the Sydney stage as part of the 44th Greek Festival of Sydney program.

Building on the festival’s commitment to showcasing authentic and diverse cultural expressions, Untamed Voices offers audiences a unique opportunity to experience the emotional depth and raw storytelling of one of Greece’s most influential musical traditions.

Held at the Factory Theatre, Marrickville, from 7:30pm, the performance will feature acclaimed artist Elsa Mouratidou alongside the renowned Taxim Trio under the direction of Con Kalamaras, delivering a captivating evening of music that honours the fearless women of rebetiko.

Con Kalamaras.

From the early 20th century to the post-war years, women played a defining role in shaping rebetiko with voices that were fearless, raw and uncompromising. This concert traces songs by legendary female singers including Marika Papagika, Rita Abatzi, Angela Papazoglou, Marika Ninou, Ioanna Georgakopoulou, Mary Linda and Sotiria Bellou, while also exploring the figure of the rebellious woman as portrayed in rebetiko; even in songs traditionally sung by men.

Moving between tenderness and defiance, Mouratidou and Taxim Trio bring these untamed voices to life, revealing the woman of rebetiko not as a muse, but as a force; singing her truth against the grain of her time.

Greek Festival of Sydney President Sue Thliveris highlighted the importance of presenting performances that celebrate both cultural heritage and artistic expression.

Untamed Voices is a powerful tribute to the women who shaped rebetiko and gave voice to stories of resilience, struggle and identity. It is a performance that honours the past while resonating strongly with contemporary audiences,” she said.

Set within the intimate and dynamic setting of the Factory Theatre, Untamed Voices promises an unforgettable evening of music, emotion and cultural connection.

Blending tradition, artistry and powerful storytelling, Untamed Voices stands as a compelling highlight of the 44th Greek Festival of Sydney.
