It is always nice to see someone make an effort to make our communities more welcoming.
The first installment of Sunday Dinner took place at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Weirton this week, and the hope is the program will grow and last for a long time to come.
It’s a new ministry, started by the Rev. Matthew Moore, the church’s pastor, with a simple goal in mind — to bring people together while sharing a meal.
There’s no effort to raise money or to spread a particular message. It’s just to provide a meal, and if you would like to eat — no matter your background — you can stop by and grab some food, sit with others from the community and spend some time together.
Sunday’s inaugural meal included pulled-pork sandwiches, coleslaw, pasta salad and dessert. The plan is to provide Sunday Dinner once each month, each time featuring a different theme and menu.
And, based on the annual Greek Festival and the Community Thanksgiving Dinner made by members of All Saints, it’s a safe bet that the food will be good.
It’s all about hospitality and bringing the community together. Weirton’s motto is “Success in Unity,” and it’s a reminder that area residents are truly at their best when they come together, whether it’s for a common cause, to help neighbors or just to sit down for a meal and get to know each other better.
Moore and the church deserve to be recognized for offering another option to make that possible.
