Santorini Experience this October expected to boost tourism with running and swimming events


Running and swimming enthusiasts will once again flock to Santorini this October 3-6 with the return of the Santorini Experience.

In its seventh year, the event on the Cycladic island will bring add even more to its offerings of villages, beaches and famous restaurants.

Runners will have the opportunity to enjoy three trail running routes, overlooking the Caldera and the views of the volcano.

The villages of Imerovigli, Firostefani and Oia serve as a backdrop.

The 5km route is designed for both running and dynamic walking, while the 10km route caters to those with more experience in longer distances.

The 15km distance is tailored for individuals who thrive on strength and endurance.

As for the open-water swimming event, participants will swim from the volcano and finish at the old port of Fira – having the imposing view of the island in front of them in the 2.4km race.

In a media release sent to Neos Kosmos, Deputy Mayor of Culture and Sports of the Municipality of Thira, Eleftherios Tzouros said the initiative proves that sports can be a strong incentive for tourists to travel.

Further, he said they can “obtain new and unique experiences, create excellent memories, and return to a destination that can offer them everything.”

He also revealed that there will be many side events in the schedule that will appeal to the locals.

Greek and global sporting personalities are expected to attend these events.

Mayor of Thira Nikos Zorzos reiterated the significance this event has on tourism for the island.

“We are especially pleased that the event we started in 2015 has laid strong foundations and continues dynamically, as an institution, to strengthen the sports tourism of our island,” he said.

“Santorini Experience will attract quality tourists who will be able to combine sports with the unparalleled beauty of our destination, get to know the local culture of the island, and of course, boost the local economy.

“We are proud that this unique path used in the event’s running routes is available to our visitors, and they can walk it all year round.”
