A rare astronomical event delighted stargazers across Greece and Europe as a blue supermoon illuminated the night sky.
This uncommon phenomenon, which only occurs three to four times a year, happens when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth, appearing up to 14% larger and one-third brighter than usual. This particular supermoon is even more extraordinary, coinciding with the first blue moon since August last year, and taking on a dark red hue due to wildfire ash in the atmosphere.
The stunning lunar display, which began earlier this week, will continue to provide spectacular views for three days, offering a rare treat for observers. However, this remarkable sight won’t be seen again until 2037. Despite its name, a blue moon isn’t blue in colour but refers to the timing of full moons within a calendar year. This moon has also been historically referred to as the green corn moon, the grain moon, and the red moon, the latter due to the reddish tint it often takes on during summer months.
The term “supermoon” was first coined in 1979 by astrologer Richard Nolle and refers to a full or new moon that occurs when the moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth. This blue supermoon is the first of four consecutive supermoons expected this year, with the full moons in September and October predicted to be the closest of the year.
While the moon’s striking colour and size have captivated many, weather changes are expected to diminish the vibrant hues as cloud cover and rain move in, clearing the haze from the atmosphere. The next blue moon, defined by the timing of full moons rather than its colour, is set to occur in May 2026.
