HOWLAND — Panos P. Zafirides, 93, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2024.

Panos was born Dec. 12, 1930, in Greece, to parents Petros and Kyriakoula Zafirides. He graduated medical school in Thessaloniki, Greece and immigrated to the United States after marrying his wife, Katherine, on Nov. 11, 1963. Together, they raised a family and had two children, Peter and Rea.

Panos graduated medical school in 1958 and completed his radiology residency in Athens, Greece. Upon immigrating, he became a staff physician in the radiology department at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown. He remained on staff until he founded Ford-Park Radiology. Later in his career, he rejoined the staff at St. Elizabeth’s until his retirement. Panos was a member of both the Mahoning County Medical Society and the Ohio State Medical Association. In 2009, Panos was recognized for completing 50 years in the practice of medicine at the annual meeting of the Mahoning County Medical Society.

Panos was a devout Greek Orthodox Christian. He took great comfort and peace in his faith. He was a member of St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church and served on the board throughout his life. He especially loved serving on the festival’s committee during the Glendi and fish fries. He was a member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) and the Eastern Orthodox Men’s Society.

Panos is survived by his children, Dr. Peter (Sophia) Zafirides of Columbus; his daughter, Rea (Dr. Jon) Eucker of Howland; and his grandchildren, Alexys, Elly, Panos, George and Catherine.

His family, faith and especially spending time with his grandchildren were his greatest joys in life. He also loved the game of golf. He was an avid golfer his entire life, playing in multiple leagues in the area.

Panos was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Katherine.

Special thanks are given to Panos’ entire team of compassionate caregivers and Ohio Living Hospice.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2024, at St. John Greek Orthodox Church in Boardman.

Friends will be received noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, at the church.
