Icelandic broadcaster RÚV, officially confirmed to Vísir news agency, the country’s participation in the competition in Basel, next May. However, the Atlantic island has yet to decide on the selection process. Will Söngvakeppnin be used again or will an internal selection take place?

Iceland will participate in Eurovision 2025, despite doubts during the Eurovision 2024 season. Even before the Söngvakeppnin final, RÚV announced that Iceland could withdraw from the contest if the winner decided to do so. Hera Björk won and went to Malmö, but finished last in the first semi-final.

With such a result, interest in the competition was at a low level. After the competition, the head of the Icelandic delegation Rúnar Freyr said in an interview that he wanted his country to participate in 2025, but the decision had yet to be made.

Nevertheless, Iceland will be present in Basel, marking their 37th appearance in the competition.

The decision to participate is mainly based on the fact that Eurovision is an event that has great value in Icelandic society, is a source of joy and satisfaction for a large part of the population and is a place for precious moments of family time throughout the country.

The broadcaster’s statement

The Vísir news agency also stated that the selection process for the 2025 participation has not yet been decided. National selection Söngvakeppnin may not be used this year, which would mark the seventh time Iceland have opted not to choose it. The last time was apparently in 2021, when Daði Freyr was intrernally selected.

If Söngvakeppnin is used again, there will be much less time to prepare, compared to last year, when submissions opened in June.

In Eurovision 2024, Iceland was represented by Hera Björk with the song ” Scared of Heights “. Unfortunately, she failed to qualify for the Grand Final and finished last in the first semi-final with 3 points .
