STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — The smell of Greek food and the sound of music filled South Fourth Street as Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church kicked off its 40th annual Greek Fest on Wednesday.
The three-day celebration of Greek culture, food and music runs from Wednesday to Friday. The festival, held since 1986, is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free, and live entertainment is scheduled throughout the event.
Tara Mougianis, a parish council member for Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and president of the Philoptochos Society, said the festival is a major tradition for the church and the community.
“We are so excited. Everybody here at the Trinity Greek Orthodox Church invites all of the community, all of our friends, all of our family to come down, join, celebrate with us,” she said.
The festival is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the church.
“And it’s important that we continue this for the community. They love the Greek Festival. The Greek Festival in Steubenville is the best Greek Festival around,” she said.
Mougianis said the church hopes visitors leave with a deeper appreciation for Greek traditions.
“We hope they take away our culture, we hope they enjoy our dancers, which will be nightly at 6 and 7:30, the cuisine, and just our Filotimo,” she said.
