One of central Athens’ most historic department stores, Notos Galleries near Omonia Square, will shut permanently on August 31, ending a significant chapter in the city’s retail history, according to tovima.com
For the past 25 years, Notos operated from the landmark building that originally housed the famous Lambropoulos department store, established in 1901. The store was renamed Notos Galleries in 1999. The company said the closure comes after the property owners decided not to renew the lease.
Situated at the intersection of Aiolou, Lykourgou and Stadiou streets, the building has been a key commercial landmark in downtown Athens and served as the flagship branch of the Notos chain for more than two decades.
Lambropoulos began as a men’s fashion retailer, introducing products that were considered modern at the time, such as ties, shirts and handkerchiefs. In 1927, the business became a public limited company and was later listed on the Athens Stock Exchange.
In a statement, management expressed gratitude to employees, suppliers, partners and loyal customers for their continued support throughout the store’s long history.
The site’s owners, DIMAND and Piraeus Bank, are planning a major mixed-use redevelopment project for the property. The new development is expected to feature retail areas, office spaces and residential apartments. DIMAND previously oversaw the redevelopment of the historic Minion department store into a contemporary mixed-use complex.
