Greek Travelers Spending More on Domestic Trips

Greek traveler spending for trips with at least one night stay increased by 40.7 percent in 2022 compared to pre-pandemic 2019 reaching 2.249 billion euros, the highest performance since 2011, according to INSETE, the Greek Tourism Confederation’s (SETE) research body.

INSETE analysts expect 2023 domestic tourism spending to increase by 9.6 percent reaching approximately 2.466 billion euros.

Key takeaways of the report which covers trips with at least one night stay in the 2019-2022 period, include:

– the number of trips increased by 17.4 percent in 2022 up from 4.9 million trips in 2019 to 5.8 million

– total spending increased by 40.7 percent up from 1.6 billion euros in 2019 to 2.2 billion euros in 2022

– the number of overnight stays increased by 9.6 percent up from 53.7 million in 2019 to 58.8 million in 2022

– average spending per person rose by 19.8 percent from 324 euros in 2019 to 388 euros in 2022

– average cost per night stay grew by 28.3 percent to 38 euros in 2022 up from 30 euros in 2019

– average length of stay marked a 6.6 percent decline in 2022 to 10.1 nights compared to 10.9 nights in 2019

According to the report, revenues generated by Greek tourists in Greece in the 2008-2022 period dropped by 41.9 percent.

Based on the data, the tourism sector’s contribution in 2023 to the Greek economy – the largest ever – reached 28.5 billion euros or 13 percent of the country’s GDP.

In 2022, the sector contributed 23.9 billion euros accounting for 11.6 percent of GDP, and in pre-Covid 2019, it contributed 23.1 billion euros or 12.6 percent of GDP.
