Medusa was one of the three Gorgon sisters in ancient Greek mythology. Once a beautiful woman, Medusa was cursed by Athena after being violated by Poseidon in Athena’s temple. Athena transformed her into a monstrous creature with snakes for hair, and a gaze that turned anyone who looked into her eyes into stone. Perseus, aided by Athena, managed to slay Medusa by using a reflective shield to avoid her gaze, ultimately beheading her. Her severed head was then presented to Athena, who mounted it on her shield, where it became a symbol of protection.
