British travelers prepare for May half-term holidays, with Greece ranking among the most sought-after Mediterranean destinations for short-haul getaways, according to ABTA.

Greece is among the top destinations attracting UK families during the May half-term break, as demand for Mediterranean getaways remains strong despite economic and geopolitical uncertainty, according to ABTA – The Travel Association.

With most schools in the UK closing this week, the weekend is expected to be one of the busiest travel periods of the spring season, with many families heading abroad for short-haul holidays.

According to ABTA, Greece, alongside Spain, Italy, Portugal and Croatia, ranks among the most sought-after destinations for the late-May school holiday period.

“The appeal of holidays abroad, and our determination to enjoy them continues to be strong, with there being no replacement for experiencing different landscapes, cultures, cuisine, and the people and experiences other places offer,” said ABTA Chief Executive Mark Tanzer.

Travelers seek value and flexibility

According to ABTA members, travelers are increasingly prioritizing holidays that combine relaxation, value for money and greater flexibility.

The findings come as the tourism industry continues to navigate inflationary pressures and broader geopolitical challenges shaping consumer spending across Europe.

“People are still getting away on their holidays this May and making the most of some excellent deals,” Tanzer said. He added that package holidays continue to appeal to travelers seeking both value and peace of mind amid ongoing global uncertainty.

City breaks and cruises remain popular

UK travelers are prioritizing relaxation, value and Mediterranean escapes during the busy May half-term travel period,

ABTA’s latest research found that 17 percent of UK adults planning an overseas holiday intended to travel during May.

Travel companies are also reporting strong demand for European city breaks and Mediterranean cruises, as travelers seek opportunities to visit multiple destinations during a single trip.

Among the leading city-break destinations are Milan, Barcelona and Paris, among others.

ABTA represents more than 3,500 UK travel brands with a combined annual turnover exceeding £41 billion.
