Festival brings taste of Greece

The 44th annual Cardiff Greek Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 7 and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 8 on the grounds of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 3459 Manchester Ave. The festival features Greek cuisine, music and dancing along with a traditional marketplace with Greek imports, fine jewelry, artwork and deli. The Olympians, a Greek band from Southern California, will perform and youths will perform folk dances in traditional costumes. Dance lessons will be offered to attendees. Greek dishes will be sold, ranging from Greek-style lamb shanks, shish-kabobs, gyros, sausage and lemon chicken to spinach pie, feta fries, Greek salad and pastries. There will be tours of the church and a Kids Fun Zone along with raffle tickets. Free parking is next door at MiraCosta College. Congregation holds open house

Temple Etz Rimon will host an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 8 at 2020 Chestnut Ave. Visitors can meet Cantor Mark Britowich, the congregation’s spiritual leader, learn about the congregation and socialize with members. Temple Etz Rimon, a Reform Jewish synagogue that shares space with Pilgrim Church, caters to mature adults and empty nesters from around North County. The 28th annual Encinitas Oktoberfest on Sept. 29, hosted by the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce, is looking for exhibitors and sponsors. Last days of Gourd Show

Michael Morgan’s San Diego Farewell Concert

Animal shelter cuts pet adoption fees in half

The San Diego Humane Society offers a 50 percent discount on adoption fees through Sept. 10 as part of Clear the Shelters Month, sponsored by NBC Universal and Telemundo. On Sept. 7, Clear the Shelters Day, adoption fees will be waived entirely. The nonprofit shelter is caring for more than 2,000 animals and over 800 of them are ready to be adopted, including many puppies and kittens. San Diego Humane Society is open for walk-in adoptions Tuesday through Sunday at its campuses in Escondido, El Cajon, Oceanside and San Diego. Gallery opens ‘Eclectic Vision’ exhibit

Santa Ysabel Art Gallery opens a new exhibit, “Eclectic Vision,” by nationally acclaimed local artist Stan Goudey on Sept. 7. The exhibit features Goudey’s latest collection, which includes urban and rural landscapes and still-life paintings. Antique buffs gather Sept. 9

El Camino Real Questers will meet at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Lake San Marcos Clubroom, 1105 La Bonita Drive. The program will be on “Salem Witch Trials.” Questers is an international organization that fosters an appreciation of antiques and collectibles, and encourages the  preservation of antiquities and historical sites. Annual pet adoption event set for Sept. 7

Chuze Fitness hosts its fifth annual “Chuze To Adopt” pet adoption event from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 7 at 215 Town Center Parkway. 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

Harrah’s Resort Southern California and the Rincon Fire Department will hold a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at 9 a.m. Sept. 7 to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on Sept. 11, 2001. Participants can climb the 110 flights of stairs, the same height as the World Trade Center towers, in the South Tower of the resort in honor of members of the FDNY Squad 18 who lost their lives that day. Members of the Rincon Fire Department and other first responders will take part with community members.

The club's 30th annual Charity Golf Tournament, co-sponsored by the Vista Education Association, was held Aug. 19 with nearly 100 golfers participating. Money raised will go to scholarships and to needs within the Vista community. The club, founded in 1974 aims to foster a sense of belonging and unity among community members. Kiwanis Club puts together 400 snack packs for school kids in need

Sunrise Vista Kiwanis Club members recently put together 400 snack packs that were later included in backpacks distributed to underserved children by the North County chapter of the NAACP. The club’s 30th annual Charity Golf Tournament, co-sponsored by the Vista Education Association, was held Aug. 19 with nearly 100 golfers participating. Gala benefits community clinic

Vista Community Clinic will put on its annual gala, “A Saturday Night Fever,” at 6 p.m. Sept. 7 under the stars at Bluebird Canyon Ranch. The night will feature a performance by the Polyester Express band. The VCC Mobile Food Pantry will be at the event, showing how access to healthy food contributes to overall community health. Proceeds from the gala will benefit the clinic’s services, including the Karen A. Black Memorial Scholarship Fund, VCC health services for the community and the new VCC Mobile Food Pantry. Garden puts on 25th anniversary gala

The Alta Vista Botanical Gardens will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a gala from 5 to 10 p.m. Sept. 7 in its Rose Garden, 1270 Vale Terrace Drive, to mark “a quarter of a century of community engagement, environmental conservation, and cultural enrichment.” The history of the botanical garden goes back to the old Smitgen property, a 15-acre site acquired by the city of Vista in 1990. Historical Society hosts barbecue

The Vista Historical Society will hold its annual community Old Fashioned Barbecue from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at 2317 Old Foothill Drive. Live country music will be performed by Nitro Express. The barbecue includes beef, pork, hot dogs, baked beans, coleslaw and dessert. Beer and wine will be sold separately, and there will be a raffle. The cost is $30; $5 for children younger than 10. Workshops on fiber arts

Fiber Arts Super Saturday Workshops will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum, 2040 N. Santa Fe Ave. The classes range from Beginning Spinning to Inkle Weaving and are taught by Palomar Handweavers and Spinners Guild members. Abraxas Garden topic of presentation

The Vista Garden Club hosts a presentation on Abraxas Garden, a continuous high school program that teaches agriculture, aquaponics and sustainability, at 1:45 p.m. Sept. 6 in the Azalea Room at the Gloria McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. The speaker is Robert Lutticken, biology teacher at Abraxus High School in Poway. Community workshop on city’s general plan

A General Plan Update Workshop will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 3 at the City Council Chambers at the Vista Civic Center, 200 Civic Center Drive. Attendees can learn about the scope of work that will be addressed in the Environmental Impact Report and provide input on the city’s general plan update, a multi-year planning and outreach initiative and blueprint for the city’s future. Last days of water park for the season
