Greece remains a top choice for European travellers, particularly in convenience and lifestyle-driven travel segments.
Greece continues to rank among Europe’s preferred travel destinations, performing strongly in convenience and lifestyle-driven segments, though its appeal varies across different traveler profiles, according to a recent European Travel Commission (ETC) study.
The report, “Understanding European Conscious Traveller Segments”, highlights a broader shift in demand, with travel decisions increasingly shaped by sustainability, authenticity and flexibility rather than traditional demographics. Based on insights from nearly 24,000 respondents, it segments travelers by attitudes and behaviors.
Findings show Spain, France and Italy leading across most categories, while Greece maintains solid positions in key segments.
Preferred European destinations vary by traveller segment, with Greece performing strongly in ease-driven travel categories.
Greece performs best among travelers seeking flexibility and simplicity. In the “Gen Z remote adventurer” segment, the country ranks among the top destinations with 9 percent, while in the “hassle-free holidaymaker” category it reaches 11 percent, trailing only Spain.
These results confirm Greece’s strong reputation as an accessible and reliable destination, benefiting from its established tourism offering and global appeal.
Moderate performance in sustainability-driven travel
At the same time, Greece records mid-tier performance among sustainability-focused travelers, attracting 7 percent in both the “impact-aware traveler” and “eco-responsible explorer” segments, remaining behind leading destinations.
The findings also point to a wider gap between intention and action, as travelers express interest in responsible travel but often lack clear options or guidance to act on it.
Greece also underperforms among “off-beat destination seekers”, with 6 percent of preferences, suggesting it is still perceived primarily as a mainstream destination rather than an alternative one.
Travel patterns shift toward flexibility and less crowded destinations
European travellers show growing preference for off-season travel, longer stays and less crowded destinations.
Beyond destination rankings, the report highlights changing travel patterns. A notable 67 percent of Europeans favor shoulder and low-season trips, while 61 percent opt for lesser-known or remote destinations.
Overtourism concerns are also shaping choices, with 26 percent actively selecting less crowded locations, while longer stays are becoming more common, as half of travelers prefer trips exceeding seven nights.
Climate change reshapes travel decisions
Climate change is increasingly shaping travel decisions, with travellers seeking milder conditions and avoiding extreme weather.
Climate considerations are increasingly influencing behavior. Around 22–26 percent of travelers check weather forecasts before booking or seek milder temperatures, while up to 24 percent avoid destinations exposed to extreme weather.
Although smaller shares adjust travel months or choose weather-independent activities, the data points to a gradual shift in planning habits driven by climate-related concerns.
Costs, crowds and uncertainty top concerns
Rising costs, overtourism and extreme weather rank among the top concerns influencing European travel plans.
Economic factors remain the dominant concern. Rising travel costs are cited by 43 percent of respondents, followed by personal financial pressures (32 percent) and geopolitical uncertainty (29 percent).
At the same time, crowding (25 percent) and extreme weather (21 percent) are increasingly shaping destination choices, while environmental impact remains a consideration for a smaller share (15 percent).
Strong demand and preference for European travel
Travel demand remains strong across Europe, with high intention to travel and solid spending plans among respondents.
Despite these concerns, travel demand remains resilient. Around 80 percent of Europeans plan to travel within Europe, with the vast majority opting for destinations within the region.
Spending intentions are also robust, with 43 percent planning to spend between 1,500 and 2,500 euros per trip, highlighting continued willingness to invest in travel experiences.
