Copenhagen Travel Essentials Packing List

For the past three years, I’ve been lucky enough to explore the vibrant streets of Copenhagen, where each stroll reveals a mix of colorful architecture, vibrant culture, and an irresistible charm that makes embracing the hygge lifestyle feel so easy. Being American and falling for a Danish boy (hej, Ken!) has its perks, especially indulging in Juno The Bakery’s famous cardamom buns (trust me, they’re a must!).

But beyond the stunning canals, bike-friendly streets, and scrumptious New Nordic cuisine, what truly captivates me is the effortless style of the locals. Brands like Ganni, Mads Nørgaard, Baum und Pferdgarten, and Samsøe Samsøe have served as inspiration for me over the years, and my visits to Copenhagen have deepened my understanding of the evolving landscape of Danish women’s fashion; that delicate balance of effortlessly cool, where minimalism meets functionality, with a sprinkle of color and sustainability. Locals have also truly mastered the art of layering unique pieces, turning practical into chic like it’s second nature; one moment you’re basking in the sunshine, and the next, a brisk breeze (or rain!) sweeps in.

My partner loves to tease me about my ever-expanding collection of sleek, minimalist pieces that now define my “Scandi cool” capsule wardrobe — and honestly, I’m here for it. So whether you’re wandering past the colorful houses of Nyhavn or sipping natural wine along the waterfront at La Banchina, I’ve curated the must-have travel essentials to help you dress and feel like a local.

A White Tee

Everlane The Slim Crew in Essential Cotton

Everlane

Every great outfit begins with a classic tee, and a soft and breathable white tee is your ideal bestie. Layer it under a cardigan for those crisp mornings by the Nyhavn waterfront, or dress it up with a chic skirt for a leisurely afternoon of bar hopping. This basic is a closet staple that you’ll find yourself gravitating towards on your Danish adventure.

Black Suit Pants

Banana Republic Wide-leg Wool Pants

Banana Republic

A pair of black trousers that seamlessly blend versatility and elegance is a must-have for any Copenhagen visit. These Banana Republic Wide-leg Pants are perfect for dressing up with kitten heels for a stylish night out, or keeping it casual with that trusty white tee and sneakers as you soak up the vibrant atmosphere of the Meatpacking District. Simple, effective, and so good.

An Oversized Button-down Shirt

Gap Organic Cotton Big Shirt

Gap

Danish style icons know the magic of an oversized, menswear-inspired shirt, and the Gap Organic Cotton Big Shirt is a perfect example. When Copenhagen’s unpredictable weather calls for a longer layering staple, this shirt becomes your go-to companion. I’ve snagged it in three colors because I just can’t resist its charm and functionality. Tuck it into high-waisted jeans, or wear it open over a tank top to fully embrace the relaxed yet refined Scandi aesthetic.

Don’t forget to tie your hair back with a claw clip; an easy and chic way to manage your hair during your adventures, these versatile accessories are not only practical for keeping your hair off your face while exploring (or biking!), but they also add a trendy flair to your look depending on the color and shape you pick.

Loose-fitting Jeans

J.Crew Denim Trousers in Chambray Blue Wash

J. Crew

When it comes to capturing that casually cool vibe seen around town, you can’t go wrong with a pair of jeans. In the summer, locals were reaching for white denim. But as we transition to fall, versatile blue jeans like these denim trousers from J.Crew are the move.  These versatile jeans can be dressed up with a chic blazer for an evening out, or kept casual and cool with a pair of sneakers for a day of biking throughout the city. The relaxed fit is ideal for allowing you to enjoy all that Copenhagen has to offer, and with its wide-leg silhouette, these jeans are sure to have you blending in with the cool crowd.

Tie the look together with a skinny black belt, which is a classic addition to your travel wardrobe and is perfect to mix and match along your trip. I love how this Uniqlo one instantly elevates a look and can offer that final touch that’s often needed to take a rather neutral look up a few notches without overdoing it.

A Wool Sweater

Everlane Classic Crew in Cashmere

Everlane

When the Copenhagen chill sets in, the Everlane Classic Crew in Cashmere becomes the perfect cozy companion. This luxurious wool sweater is the perfect lightweight layer to wrap yourself in warmth during unexpected gusts of wind. Its classic silhouette pairs nicely with everything from trousers to your favorite baggy jeans, making it an incredibly versatile addition to your travel wardrobe rotation while you’re on the go all day.

Retro Walking Sneakers

New Balance 1906R Sneakers

New Balance

When exploring the vibrant streets of Copenhagen, a pair of functional yet stylish sneakers is an absolute must. In a city where biking is the norm, if you’re not on two wheels, you’ll likely be racking up plenty of steps as you soak in the sights. I am biased towards my New Balance 1906Rs, as these sneakers blend comfort with a sleek design, making them perfect for a day of wandering through picturesque neighborhoods or hopping from one bakery to another. With their cushioned soles and trendy “dad sneaker” silhouette, they can confidently take on the city, and trust me, your feet will thank you after a day of sightseeing.

Dressy Loafers

J.Crew Winona Penny Loafers

J.Crew

For a dressier option, a pair of loafers is an absolute travel must-have. These chic loafers blend comfort and style, and their timeless design adds a polished finish to any outfit. I adore the cushioned insoles, which make them perfect for exploring the city with ease while allowing you to transition seamlessly from day to night (although I would highly recommend breaking in a pair of loafers ahead of taking them on a trip to Copenhagen). By slipping into these loafers, you’ll embody that refined yet relaxed aesthetic that locals wear so well.

Simple Ballet Flats

Madewell The Greta Ballet Flats

Madewell

While high heels may dominate the streets of other European cities, locals in Copenhagen often favor functional yet chic classic flats for their nights out. Among the many stylish options available, I lean towards ballet flats or Mary Janes. These timeless choices perfectly blend comfort and elegance, making them essential for any fashion-conscious traveler looking to transition their outfit seamlessly from day to night. With the right pair, you can navigate the city with ease while maintaining that effortless Danish vibe.

A Classic Trench Coat

Everlane The Mac Coat

Everlane

In a city where the weather can change in the blink of an eye, a lightweight jacket is the essential Copenhagen companion, and nothing says timeless elegance like a classic trench coat. I love this Double-breasted Trench Coat from Everlane. It’s perfect for those drizzly days so you add an air of sophistication to any outfit while keeping yourself dry and warm.

An Oversized Blazer

We all need a hero piece in our packing list, and an oversized blazer might just be that standout item for your Copenhagen adventure. I will never forget the first blazer my partner Ken gifted me for my birthday from Anine Bing. Three years later, this piece still stays in my rotation for all of my travels, especially to Copenhagen. An oversized blazer is a versatile staple that not only balances out any outfit but also adds a touch of effortless sophistication that never goes out of style. Come 9 a.m. on a busy weekday, you’ll see swarms of stylish commuters rocking chic oversized blazers as they head to work. If you want to blend in with the locals and elevate your look, be sure to pack this essential piece in your suitcase.

A Cool Leather Jacket

Mango Leather-effect Jacket

Mango

The leather jacket is a quintessential staple for any fashion-savvy traveler’s wardrobe, especially in the transitional seasons of fall and spring. In Copenhagen, you’ll naturally gravitate toward its sleek silhouette and edgy appeal, as it elevates even the simplest outfits. I love how it adds an instant dose of cool, making it easy to blend in with the stylish crowds of Nørrebro, a vibrant multicultural neighborhood buzzing with creativity. Whether you’re exploring local vintage shops or museum hopping, an oversized leather jacket is your ticket to embracing Copenhagen’s cool-girl vibe.

A Carryall Leather Tote

Madewell Essential Bucket Tote

Madewell

The Madewell Essential Bucket Tote is the ideal blend of style and practicality. I mean, it’s called Essential for a reason. With its spacious interior and minimalist design, this tote carries everything you need for a day of exploring (or maybe just a few extra pastries). The chic and structured silhouette complements any outfit, making it a must-have for the modern traveler.

A Casual Crossbody

Amazon Baggu Nylon Crescent Bag

A colorful handbag is a fresh way to add some contrast to an otherwise neutral outfit. For a more fun yet functional option, I would opt for the Baggu Nylon Crescent Bag. It’s your perfect companion for a more casual, sporty, and practical look. The lightweight design and spacious interior allow you to carry your essentials while keeping your hands free for a cup of coffee or a quick photo op. You’ll be rocking the ultimate sporty chic look with this option.
