China Gets a Taste of Greek Culture with Live Special Guest Singer Erini

New York City-based Greek singer Erini traveled to China to share her enchanting voice and a song from Greek culture, with a nationwide Chinese television audience.

She was selected by a Chinese government mission program to represent Greece in a cultural exchange show “Music in Joy” with singers from all parts of China and from different places in the world.

Ereni sang a Greek traditional song “Apo Xeno Topo” (From a Foreign Place) on the second largest TV station in the country, Hunan TV, and Mango TV, during a live broadcast on August 23, 2024.

She traveled to Changsha, China, together with instrumentalist Tasos Poulios, who accompanied Ereni on the kanun, along with other local Chinese musicians on the percussion.

Heard by over a million people during her tour with Cirque Du Soleil, Erini’s voice is characterized by ornaments from the Greek tradition and inspired by far-ranging influences such as jazz, pop and classical music.

Growing up in a musical family on the island of Crete, Greece, Erini played the piano and cello and performed with her hometown’s string orchestra and choir.

As a descendant of Asia Minor-Greek refugees, Erini’s mother introduced her to the Asia Minor-Greek musical tradition which ignited Erini’s passion for singing.
