Athens set to host book presentation on history of the Greek Community of Melbourne

The Greek Community of Melbourne has made significant strides in researching its history for the past decade, culminating in the publication of a book chronicling it which is now set to be presented in Athens.

The book by author Georgia Charpantidou was first released in Greek (published in late 2022), and has now been translated by Sydney-based Petros Alexiou under the title “The Embodiment of a Distant Homeland – the history of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria from its founding to 1972”

Both versions were published by Themelio Publications in Athens, a notable company with 60 years of experience in the world of books.

Dr Nick Dallas, a GCM Board Member who oversaw the project, expressed that they “could not have asked for a better partner” and sent his congratulations to Anna Malikiosi and the rest of the team from Themelio.

He added that “it was important to have the title translated into English, as we want not only future generations but also scholars of the global diaspora, Greek and non-Greek, to have access to the content”.

A presentation will be held of the book at the Themelio bookstore on 5 September, 7pm, to celebrate the recent publication.

Both the author and translator will be in Athens for the event, along with Australia’s Ambassador to Greece, Alison Duncan.

In addition, Kostas Katsapis, historian from Panteion University and author of the book ‘Australia: Ten Stories’, has been invited to present the book.

Themelio has extended an open invitation to all Greek Australians and people interested in diaspora issues to attend the event.
