Archbishop Makarios of Australia attended the concert which took place in Sydney on Saturday evening, 31 October, by the popular Greek singer Mr Nikos Oikonomopoulos, as part of his anniversary tour marking twenty years of a successful career in Greek music.
The presence of His Eminence came as a pleasant surprise to the large audience attending the concert, who, upon noticing his arrival, welcomed him with particularly warm and prolonged applause, spontaneously expressing their love and respect for the Shepherd of the Orthodox Church in Australia.
The concert, which took place at the Sydney Lyric, was a special evening for Sydney’s Greek community, which turned out in large numbers and enthusiastically embraced the beloved singer.
During the evening, His Eminence had the opportunity to meet and converse warmly with Mr Oikonomopoulos, to whom he expressed his joy at his presence in Australia and wished him health, strength and the uninterrupted continuation of his successful artistic career.
Archbishop Makarios also spoke with particular warmth about the importance of visits by Greek artists to Australia, pointing out that their presence strengthens the bonds between the Greek diaspora and Greece and offers, particularly to the younger generations of Greek Australians, opportunities for direct engagement with contemporary Greek music and cultural creativity.
The meeting took place in a cordial atmosphere, while His Eminence congratulated the singer on completing twenty years of creative involvement in Greek music and wished him every success in his forthcoming performances in Australia.
