“Be Greek for a day” at the annual GreekFest hosted by the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church located at 21800 Marter Road.
It all starts at 4 p.m. on Aug. 21 and lasts three days. Festival times are 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Aug 21, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Aug. 22 and noon to 7 p.m. on Aug. 23. The grand opening is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Aug. 21. Admission each day is $3.
Joan DeRonne, administrator of the Assumption Cultural Center, said the celebration of the country’s 250th birthday is a focus this year as well as returning with the food and traditions of Hellenic culture.
“We love to share that with everyone and the festival has become kind of like a neighborhood class reunion where everybody meets and sees people they haven’t seen all year,” DeRonne said.
The festival will feature Greek food, live music, the Assumption Dancers and much more. Some of the food includes lamb, rice pilaf, loukoumades and more. Carry out is also available.
Wally’s Frozen Custard will be there serving sweet treats.
At the grand opening, the Grosse Pointe South Marching Band will perform. United States Olympic ice dancers Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik will attend the grand opening and the Saturday festivities.
“And we will also be introducing all of our city leaders and area dignitaries who come together all year long to support the community and we like to honor them as well,” DeRonne said.
Councilwoman Candice Rusie said in an email it’s a wonderful community event and that she’s glad the Assumption community has kept it going.
“I’m looking forward to volunteering with food service on Sunday afternoon, and to enjoying several delicious Greek meals there throughout the weekend,” Rusie said in the email.
