After the Roman Empire fell, the panathenaic stadium fell into disuse and much of its marble was looted. In 1895, a wealthy entrepreneur funded a full restoration using white marble, which was completed in 1900.
The stadium was originally built to host the Panathenaic Games, a festival honoring the goddess Athena. It also hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and is the starting point of the Olympic flame torch relay.
