When I first ran across this story, I thought, “That’s weird.” But then I thought back to all those medieval chants that echoed through Gothic cathedrals back in the day. That music was inspired by the natural reverb found in those buildings; Long notes, drenched in echo, drifting for many seconds before decaying. It sounded like…doom.
So here we are with Father Dionysios Tabakis of Nafplio, Greece. He’s into a religious sort of doom metal, which isn’t far removed from what his forebears chanted in church. Father Tabakis has a doom metal album called Paradise Metal.
This is made a little interesting in that the Greek Orthodox Church tends to frown on all musical instruments and secular music tools of Satan. Father Tabakis is cool with that, though.
Put him on tour with Sunn 0))).
