In a few weeks, I will bid farewell to Athens and conclude my term as ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Hellenic Republic after four unforgettable years. Such moments naturally invite reflection. They offer an opportunity to look back not only at what has been accomplished, but also at the partnerships strengthened and the friendships forged along the way.
When I arrived in Greece in 2022, I knew I was coming to a country with which Egypt shares an exceptional historical relationship. As my departure approaches, I find myself reflecting on a relationship that is both unique and enduring. The ties between Egypt and Greece are not merely the product of diplomacy or converging interests. They are rooted in centuries of interaction, shaped by geography, enriched by two rich civilizations that have contributed profoundly to human history, and sustained by a genuine closeness between our peoples. From the Pyramids of Giza to the Acropolis of Athens, our histories stand among humanity’s most enduring achievements.
The historic Greek presence in Egypt, particularly in Alexandria, remains a powerful testament to this shared heritage and to the deep bonds that unite our nations. During the past four years, I have had the privilege of witnessing a remarkable evolution in our bilateral relationship. Building on these historical foundations, Egypt and Greece have elevated their cooperation to the level of a strategic partnership, guided by a shared vision for stability, prosperity and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The frequent high-level meetings between President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, together with the intensive engagement between ministers, parliamentarians and senior officials from both countries, have given our relationship unprecedented momentum. Their commitment and strategic vision have been instrumental in elevating our bilateral relationship to new heights. This momentum was further reflected in the visit of the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, to Cairo in March this year, underscoring the growing depth and multidimensional nature of our partnership. The establishment of the strategic partnership between Egypt and Greece marked an important milestone in this journey. More than a diplomatic achievement, it reflected a mature relationship founded on trust, consistency and a shared understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing our region.
One of the most significant outcomes of this partnership has been the agreement on seasonal workers. At a time when migration is often discussed primarily in terms of challenges, Egypt and Greece have demonstrated that cooperation can provide practical and mutually beneficial solutions. The agreement has created legal pathways for Egyptian workers to contribute to sectors of the Greek economy that require skilled labor while ensuring protection, dignity and opportunity.
Behind every agreement are human aspirations, and behind this initiative are individuals seeking a better future for themselves and their families. Their stories represent one of the most meaningful expressions of cooperation between our two countries. Another area where our partnership has acquired strategic significance is energy. The GREGY electricity interconnection project represents one of the most ambitious initiatives linking Africa and Europe. By connecting Egypt’s growing renewable energy capacity with Greece and the wider European market, the project contributes to energy security, sustainability and regional connectivity. It is a powerful example of how our countries are working together not only for our own benefit, but also for the broader interests of our region. Our cooperation has also expanded in the environmental field.
Joint efforts aimed at addressing pollution and promoting sustainability, including cooperation related to the Suez Canal region, reflect our shared conviction that economic development and environmental responsibility must advance hand in hand. At the regional level, Egypt and Greece, together with Cyprus, have continued to strengthen a partnership that has become an important pillar of dialogue, stability and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean. In a region often confronted by uncertainty and complex challenges, this framework has demonstrated the value of constructive engagement, respect for international law and a commitment to peaceful cooperation. Yet beyond agreements, projects and official visits, the true strength of Egypt-Greece relations lies in the understanding that exists between our peoples.
Throughout my tenure, I had the opportunity to engage with Greeks from all walks of life. Whether among public officials, academics, business leaders, journalists, members of civil society or ordinary citizens, I consistently encountered warmth, openness and goodwill. These experiences reinforced my belief that the friendship between Egypt and Greece rests on foundations that extend well beyond politics. I would also like to acknowledge the Egyptian community in Greece and the Greek community in Egypt. They remain living bridges between our two nations and a daily reminder of the closeness of our societies. As I prepare to leave Athens, I do so with great confidence in the future of Egypt-Greece relations.
The foundations of our partnership are stronger than ever. They rest not only on strategic interests and successful cooperation, but also on a long history of mutual respect and goodwill. I am deeply grateful to the Greek authorities and institutions whose cooperation made my mission possible, and above all to the Greek people for the kindness, friendship and generosity they extended to me throughout my stay.
As I bid farewell to Athens, I do so with gratitude for the years I have spent here and with confidence that the friendship between Egypt and Greece will continue to flourish for many years to come.
