It turns out, after the Right-wingers like Elon Musk absolutely freaked out under the guide of “historical accuracy” following fan theories that Elliot Page would play Achilles (a mythical person, by the way) in Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey, he might actually be playing someone else. Don’t worry — this character is also fictional!
An employee for the Hungarian distributor of the film, UIP-Duna Film, reportedly accidentally shared that Page would actually be playing Sinon, not the Greek mythical warrior Achilles, with online publication IGN Hungary. Per a translation of IGN Hungary reviewed by Them, the employee emailed a list of the Hungarian voice actors dubbing for each of the characters and corresponding actors to the publication, which featured Page’s name next to Sinon ratchet than Achilles.
Sinon was a fictional Greek warrior during the Trojan War who was not featured in Homer’s The Odyssey, but rather in the epic poem Aeneid by Virgil. He is Odysseus’s cousin, and is described by Virgil as a trickster who convinces the Trojans to let in a giant wooden horse left by the Greek army into the city of Troy, which actually serves as a vessel for the soldiers to enter the city and wreak havoc. Page’s exact role in the Odyssey has not been confirmed by Universal Pictures.
When it was first announced that Page would play a supporting role in The Odyssey, and speculated that he would be playing Achilles, Far-Right figure heads were quick to express their discontent. Newsmax anchor Rob Finnerty misgendered and deadnamed Page for an entire segment in which he argued that it would be historically inaccurate for a trans man to play Achilles, who he described as the “greatest warrior in history.” It’s important to note, reader, that for those unfamiliar with Greek history, this is factually incorrect, given that Achilles is, again, not a real person, and is, in fact, a figure in Greek mythology — emphasis on the myth part.
Regardless of who Page is playing in The Odyssey, it’s clear that the conservative right has nothing better to do than to not read Greek mythology and post rage bait online. Regardless, we’ll certainly be tuning in to watch Elliot Page play whichever Greek mythological figure he is slated to be later this year.
