The musical legacy of the legendary Greek composer Mimis Plessas came to life in Melbourne as more than 1,000 spectators flooded the Melbourne Recital Centre for a concert dedicated to him more than 100 years on from his birth.
The concert titled “100 Years of Mimis Plessas – A Living Tribute”, organised by the Greek Community of Melbourne, turned into a celebration of memory, nostalgia and culture, bringing together people of different generations to experience the melodies of the composer.
The main event of the evening was Greek singer Dimitris Basis, who transported the audience to the golden era of Greek song with his characteristic voice and expressiveness.

He was joined on stage by the performer Maria Yiakoulis, who also impressed, distinguished conductor George Ellis, and a 20-member orchestra enriched with traditional Greek instruments that performed the iconic compositions of Plessas.
During the two-hour concert, some of the composer’s most iconic songs were heard, in orchestrations that balanced between the symphonic and the simple, moving power of the Greek musical tradition.

Familiar melodies filled the room and awakened memories, as many of those present softly sang songs that had accompanied their lives for decades.
The emotion was prevalent among the audience as they responded warmly to each song, proving that the work of Mimis Plessas continues to be an integral part of the Greek soul, even thousands of kilometres away from home.

The concert in Melbourne was part of the events taking place around the world more than 100 years on from the birth of the leading composer.
The evening culminated in a prolonged standing ovation. The audience rose from their seats, sang along with the artists, applauded enthusiastically and paid their own tribute to one of the most important musical creators of Hellenism.
