But, for those in Greek life, the college lifestyle can be much more luxurious than that. Forever the settings for young adult comedies and coming-of-age horror films, these houses are beacons of Greek culture on college campuses across the country, but even more, they are notoriously posh, sporting spiral staircases, fenced terraces, and, in one case, a swimming pool. Phi Mu, the University of Alabama
Rising to fame as a result of the 2021 #bamarush trend, Phi Mu’s neoclassical mansion at the University of Alabama is a sleek black and white fever dream featuring marble flooring, a grand piano, and a chandelier from “America’s Palace,” the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City, where actual Presidents have preferred to stay. The home comes in at around 39,444 square feet and also features a roof terrace adorned with a black cast iron fence to contrast the solid white Greek pillars.
Chi Omega, the University of Arkansas
The original Chi Omega house was built in 1928, its original structure has been restored and expanded upon, but never redesigned.
Chi Omega was actually founded at the University of Arkansas in 1895, marking the start of what would become the largest fraternal women’s organization and scoring this stunning 36,000-square-foot colonial home landmark status on the National Register of Historic Places. The home underwent major renovations in 2016, adding an additional 9,000-square-foot wing. The home now accommodates 92 members and features a paved patio for taking in the sunshine while studying, a marble-floored dining room, and a walled back terrace for lounging.
Alpha Phi, the University of Colorado Boulder
A 2018 report found that the sorority houses at the University of Colorado Boulder are amongst the highest valued in the nation. This French Eclectic mansion is known as the “dreamhouse” on campus and on social media, featuring crittall-style, floor-to-ceiling windows, high tray ceilings, and exposed brick for rustic charm, carrying a powder blue and pastel pink color scheme throughout the 15,976-square-foot home.
Kappa Alpha Theta, the University of Southern California
This butter-yellow California mansion is an ode to coastal charm, boasting tray ceilings, a rose -adorned balcony, chic wall molding, and a rooftop lounge complete with a cabana and the chapter’s initial motif.
Tri Delta, University of Florida
The Delta Delta Delta house at the University of Florida capitalizes on the state’s sunny reputation with a massive backyard pergola shading an inlaid triple delta logo. Inside, the home features a spiral staircase straight out of Mia’s loft in The Princess Diaries, a grand piano, and in-house laundry.
Alpha Phi, the University of Mississippi
Clocking in at 25,800 square feet, this black and white four-story mansion embodies Southern charm, with a classic wrap-around porch, arched floor-to-ceiling windows, and the 1872 room, named for the chapter’s founding and reserved for special guest stays.
Gamma Phi Beta, University of Oregon
This classic Tudor may look quaint, but its interior is as large as it is luxe. Lovingly called “The Castle” on campus, this 8,000-square-foot mansion is home to around 55 members and features a stone-faced functional fireplace, a French-door-enclosed terrace, and an in-house library.
Alpha Gamma Delta, University of Georgia
Alpha Gamma Delta’s on-campus home may look like it belongs on Capitol Hill, but make no mistake, this crown-moulded vision in white finds its home in Athens. The historic Beaux-Arts mansion houses just over 70 members and features a dark wood staircase, along with wall paneling, hand-painted murals, floral details, and posh Tiffany stained glass windows.
Delta Gamma, University of Texas
Nicknamed “The Deeg,” the sisters at Delta Gamma live in a gorgeous white brick mansion adorned by black-framed arch windows with matching balconies. The home features a sun-drenched Garden Room, a mauve-themed study room, and is the only Gamma Chapter to have a swimming pool—an essential given the Texas heat.
Sigma Kappa, the University of Washington
This 28,035-square-foot Tudor Revival-style mansion was built in 1930. Drenched in emerald, the home features a marble-faced fireplace with a floral-inspired mantle, a crystal chandelier, and a spiral staircase that sets the standard for all Sigma Kappa chapters. The addition of the spiral staircase in all Sigma Kappa homes has become a hallmark of the sisterhood and an enduring aspect of the organization’s legacy.
