Sydney to spotlight women of rebetiko through upcoming concert

The Greek Festival of Sydney will present ‘Untamed Voices’ on Sunday 19 April, showcasing music that honours the women of rebetiko music.

The concert will be held at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville at 7.30pm, and will feature artist Elsa Mouratidou alongside the Taxim Trio under the direction of Con Kalamaras.

The performance will cover songs by famous female singers including Marika Papagika, Rita Abatzi, Angela Papazoglou, Marika Ninou, Ioanna Georgakopoulou, Mary Linda and Sotiria Bellou, while also exploring the figure of the rebellious woman as portrayed in rebetiko; even in songs traditionally sung by men.

“Untamed Voices is a powerful tribute to the women who shaped rebetiko and gave voice to stories of resilience, struggle and identity,” said Greek Festival of Sydney President Sue Thliveris in a press release.

It is a performance that honours the past while resonating strongly with contemporary audiences.”
