WMU Multicultural Greek Council celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month with fiesta

Sunday marked the first day of National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Western Michigan University’s Multicultural Greek Council kicked off the month-long celebration with their second annual Multicultural Greek Council, or MGC, Fiesta.

Those who attended could enjoy music, food and games at the W Plaza on campus all afternoon.

“We know there’s a strong connection when we provide that culturally responsive engagement particularly in academic affairs, and when we draw that connection we know it equates to academic success,” Cristóbal Rodríguez, associate provost for Equity-Centered Initiatives, said. “To be able to connect community and with faculty and staff, especially not just the impact it has on students who look like and speak like the faculty and staff that work here, but also we know that kinda connection supports the success of all of our students.”

“It’s really cool to bond together, have this event and it means a lot to me just because I am of Hispanic descent,” Mortin Solis, multicultural Greek council president, added. “Both my parents are from El Salvador so it’s really nice to celebrate our background.”

The fiesta closed out a weekend of activities at WMU for Unity Weekend.

Following Unity Weekend, the MGC is set to host a winter formal on Dec. 6.
