Hellenic Writers and Greek consulate hold joint event honouring Lord Byron’s legacy

A tribute evening featuring poetry, music and lectures honouring Lord Byron’s legacy is set to take place in October, organised by the Hellenic Writers Association of Australia and Melbourne’s Greek consulate.

The event titled ‘Lord Byron, a Philhellene poet’ will be held on Saturday, 19 October at the Greek consulate’s event hall, 37-39 Albert Rd, Melbourne.

From 6pm onwards, academics and experts on Lord Byron’s life and work will be sharing their insights through poetry reciting, music performances and lectures highlighting his contribution in the Greek War of Independence and the movement of philhellenism.

Dr Spiz Demetriou who completed her PhD studies with a thesis focusing on Mesologgi, Philhellenism and art in the 19th century, will lead the conversation as the main speaker.

Members of parliament, consul general delegations of Greece and the UK as well as several representatives of cultural clubs are expected to be in attendance.

Holding it under the auspices of the Greek Consul General in Melbourne, organisers say, is an indication of the importance of this special event dedicated to the memory and impact of Lord Byron within the broader discourse of Greek cultural heritage advancement.

Lord Byron, an English poet and a leading figure in the Romantic Movement, travelled widely across Europe, especially in Italy where he lived for seven years. Later in life, Byron joined the Greek War of Independence fighting the Ottoman Empire, for which many Greeks revere him as a national hero. He died in 1824 at the young age of 36 from a fever contracted while in Mesologgi.

The event is open for the general public to attend..
