Explorations of Epirote Folk Music: An American Southerner in Northern Greece

NEW YORK, NY –

The Hellenic-American Cultural Foundation hosts a curated evening of Epirote music with Christopher C. King on October 9, 2024, at 7pm, at The Rubin Museum of Art, 150 West 17th Street, New York City

Mr. King was bestowed an honorary Greek citizenship, and is a writer, curator, and Grammy-winning producer. He will introduce himself and his work, after which he will refer to excerpts from his book, Lament from Epirus: An Odyssey into Europe’s Oldest Surviving Folk Music, a Wall Street Journal Best Book of 2018, which explores the powerfully cathartic nature of this ancient Greek folk music. His narration will be interspersed with interludes of live Epirote music by Aurel QuirjoBeth Bahia Cohen, and John Themelis, as well from Mr. King’s rare, archival 78 rpm discs.

Nicholas Gage, award-winning investigative reporter for The New York Times and author of seven acclaimed books, will join and provide background of this area of Greece, as well as oversee the question and answer segment with Mr. King. The evening will conclude with the musicians playing a set of Epirote music. A reception will follow the event.
