Can the worlds of classical ballet and Zorba the Greek collide? It seems so as a highly anticipated production this year brings a unique celebration of Greek spirit, movement and memory. Premiering at Paphos Castle, the performance will bring together legendary artists Greek singer Alkistis Protopsalti, the ensemble of the Slovene National Theatre Maribor, lead Bolshoi Theatre dancer Igor Tsvriko, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and Diastasis Vocal Ensemble.
Performing under the musical direction of Lucas Karytinos, one of Greece’s most acclaimed conductors, the shows promise to be an immersive fusion of dance, music, myth and landscape. Two shows will take place on September 26 and 27. Blending both local splendour and international talent, the production is set to be a landmark performance that seeks to set Cyprus as the epicentre of international cultural dialogue.
“While Zorba has previously touched Cypriot soil,” say organisers, “never before has the island seen a version of such scale and ambition — uniting live symphonic music, choral force and a cast of over 150 artists beneath the Mediterranean sky. The stage is set not only for a performance, but for a celebration of Greek soul, movement and memory — with even the pulse of sirtaki echoing through history.”
Presented under the patronage of the ministry of culture and with the support of Paphos Municipality, the event is produced by Celebrity Gala, in collaboration with Papadopoulos & Schinis Productions Ltd.
It is choreographed by Lorca Massine, the son of the legendary Léonide Massine. Zorba the Greek distils the spirit of Nikos Kazantzakis’ celebrated novel into a visceral theatrical experience of freedom, defiance and love, set to the electrifying score by Mikis Theodorakis.
“The 2025 presentation of Zorba the Greek is not only a performance,” add organisers, “it is a statement. Through its scale, cast and setting, it signals Cyprus’ readiness to host world-class productions that honour both heritage and artistic innovation.
“The event is part of a broader vision led by Celebrity Gala — Cyprus’ premier producer of cultural events — to weave global excellence into the evolving identity of the island. With its signature dedication to artistic quality, emotional power and logistical precision, Celebrity Gala redefines what is possible in the Eastern Mediterranean’s cultural arena.”
