This week, Year 3 took part in an exciting and immersive Ancient Greek Day, bringing history to life through a full day of activities inspired by the culture, art, and competitive spirit of Ancient Greece.
The day began with pupils being sorted into their city-state teams: Athenians and Spartans. After morning registration, the children either began crafting traditional laurel wreaths or headed straight into their first Olympic events, depending on the schedule.
During the morning, the playground was transformed into an Ancient Greek Olympic arena, where the children competed in a variety of events. These included a relay race, standing long jump, javelin, discus, and shot put, with each pupil given three attempts per event. The final challenge was a whole-class marathon, with all pupils running 26 widths of the playground. Points were recorded, and although the results were kept secret, excitement was high ahead of the afternoon announcements.
After lunch, the children channelled their creativity in an art session, making colourful and dramatic Medusa masks, inspired by one of Greek mythology’s most famous figures. Meanwhile, preparations were underway for a celebratory Greek Feast, complete with long banquet tables, goblets, themed decorations, and Greek music.
The day ended with the much-anticipated feast, where the Olympic winners were revealed, and all pupils celebrated a day of learning, fun, and teamwork. It was a wonderful opportunity for Year 3 to deepen their understanding of Ancient Greek culture in an engaging and memorable way.
Well done, Year 3, for your enthusiasm, creativity, and excellent sportsmanship throughout the day!
