With Music, a Drone Show and Silent Fireworks, Athens Welcomed 2026

ATHENS – As every year, Syntagma Square once again became the focal point of Athens’ New Year celebrations. A large crowd braved the cold and gathered early to enjoy the musical show prepared by Kostas Maraveyas and Rena Morfi. The event was opened musically by the Athens Municipality Philharmonic Orchestra.

When the moment for the change of the year arrived, Athens Mayor Haris Doukas took to the stage in the square, extended his wishes for the new year, spoke of “an Athens that unites,” and together with the artists led the countdown to the arrival of 2026.

At exactly midnight, fireworks were launched, lighting up the Attica sky. As in previous years, most of them were silent fireworks, so as not to disturb the four-legged “residents” of the capital. At the same time, hundreds of drones filled the sky with illuminated patterns, and at the end formed the face of Dionysis Savvopoulos, as two of his songs were performed on stage as a small tribute.

The party with Maraveyas and Morfi continued after midnight. The evening was hosted by Nikos Moutsinas and Tonia Sotiropoulou.
