Oscar-nominated actor Willem Dafoe, one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and recognizable performers, has surprised Greek audiences by appearing in a music video shot in Athens. In Avrio Vrady (Tomorrow Night) from Greek musical duo Gamma Gamma, the 69-year-old actor rises from a table inside a dimly lit Greek tavern and unleashes a wave of emotion, expressing love and obsession through dance.
The video clip, shot in a single day at an old Greek tavern in Chalandri, was directed by filmmaker Vasilis Katsoupis. The track itself comes from Gamma Gamma’s first album Katholou Techni (No Art at All), released by Minos EMI.
Behind the Gamma Gamma project are two influential figures in Greece’s contemporary arts and music scene: Giorgos Karnavas, co-founder of Heretic Films and the Synch Festival, and musician Giorgos Dimakis, also known as Prins Obi and a member of the experimental band Baby Guru.
Speaking about the collaboration in the Greek magazine Lifo, Karnavas explained that Dafoe became involved thanks to their long-standing friendship and collaboration on two films — Inside by Vasilis Katsoupis and the upcoming Birthday Party, written and produced by Karnavas himself. When Dafoe learned that Karnavas was also working on a music album, he offered to star in the video as a token of his appreciation towards the Greek filmmaker.
Discussing his decision to take on the project, Dafoe shared: “I was very happy to reunite with Vasilis Katsoupis and Giorgos Karnavas, the director and producer of our film Inside. It is a crazy movement piece, and I’m always happy for a reason to be in Athens.”
