A plethora of concerts, recitals and orchestra performances are coming up this weekend from Cyprus, Greece and the international music scene. Theatre halls all over the island are about to fill with music while pop-up events will include participants going on village walks to Cyprus’ mining past.
Just before the weekend begins, a concert in Limassol’s Rialto Theatre brings together two Greek singers to charm audiences on Friday night. Margarita Zorbala, the renowned Greek singer with a remarkable, decades-long career marked by a repertoire of songs written by outstanding composers invited upcoming singer, musician and artist Maria Papageorgiou to co-create and present their musical vision on women’s voices and female composition. Their concert is titled Women in Creation and will celebrate Greek music and female artists.
As the weekend arrives, a variety of orchestra-led concerts will tour Cyprus. Local musicians and artists travelling from abroad will offer evenings of classical music, powerful compositions and film soundtracks. The Winter Dreams concert with the Prometheus String Quartet will offer music inspired by the four seasons, written by some of the world’s most renowned composers and adapted for this string quartet. The quartet will perform first in Paphos on Saturday and then in Nicosia on Sunday.
Also performing around Cyprus this weekend is the international Lords of the Sound Orchestra which will present two programmes. The Music of Hans Zimmer on Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in Limassol, Nicosia and Paphos will combine the best compositions by Zimmer as seen in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, The Dark Knight, Gladiator, Dune, The Lion King and many more. Soloists, a choir and a rock band will add to the performance creating a unique atmosphere.
The same orchestra will also present the Lords of the Rings in Concert performing music from the film trilogy, transporting audiences in Limassol, Nicosia and Paphos to the land of hobbits, knights and Mordor. Few tickets are left for Friday’s, Saturday’s and Sunday’s concerts which will bring to life the Oscar-winning music of Howard Shore.
For a break from the weekend’s packed concert schedule, a guided walk in English will take participants to Katydata village to explore Cyprus’ mining history and how its industry changed the lives of Cypriots. Mining the past: From slag to capitalism on Saturday morning is an initiative by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation with Bahçes Histories of Cyprus, and is the first of a series of educational walks.
It will begin at 11am from Katydata’s community council building, heading towards Skouriotissa. Participants of all backgrounds are encouraged to join this free walk, and though it will be held in English, simultaneous translation in Greek will be given.
