The month of November is rich in performances and shows as the cultural world has entered its busy season. In Limassol, the Rialto Theatre has a packed agenda with almost daily events bringing local talent to the stage. Here’s what’s coming up in the next two weeks.
This week, the 24th Cyprus Choreography Platform will highlight new contemporary choreography projects by presenting 11 new dance pieces. Selected choreographers (Maria Kasapi, Harry Koushios, Panos Malactos, Konstantina Skalionda, Panayiotis Tofi, Lia Haraki, Ivi Hadjivassiliou, Alexandra Waierstall, Styliana Apostolou, Maria Gerasimou and Melina Sophocleous) will showcase their works from November 15 to 17 at 8.30pm. The platform’s main programme is enriched by the Dance Throughout the Year series of parallel events, organised by Dance House Lemesos.
Soon after, Dionysus Theatre will present its production of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America: Millenium Approaches. This is a profoundly political work, regarded as one of the most significant contemporary theatrical plays which will take the Rialto Theatre stage on November 19, presented in Greek. Through escalating conflicts, the crisis reveals itself on a political, sexual, religious, economic, ecological, healthcare, and most importantly, moral level. The Reagan US administration echoes the era we live in, marked by the rise of the extreme right.
On the following evening, it will be time for music. A concert with two pianos in memory of Rudolf Kehrer will take place on November 20. On stage, Cypriot pianist Manolis Neophytou and Austrian pianist Markus Schirmer will present a repertoire in memory of their mentor, an eminent figure of the Russian piano school in the 20th century. The concert will present works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Milhaud for solo and two pianos.
The next production returns to the theatre world. Antilogos Theatre will present Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s Oscar et la Dame Rose on November 24, a heartfelt narrative about life, full of sensitivity and humour, seen through the eyes of a little boy. A well-known cast of young and established Cypriot actors will bring the tale to life for one night only.
Two days later, a group of musicians will pay tribute to Nikos Gatsos, a renowned Greek songwriter, author, and translator. Babis Stokas, Myrto Vassiliou and Anna Chrysanthou, alongside Rythmos Orchestra, will perform a repertoire of songs including those written by Gatsos and composed by some of the most celebrated Greek musical minds, such as Manos Hadjidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarhakos, Dimos Moutsis, Loukianos Kilaidonis and Christodoulos Halaris as well as composer Nikos Hiotoglou. The ensemble promises a celebratory concert as the grand poet’s lyrics will resonate with audiences of all ages, evoking memories for the seniors and inspiring the younger generation.
Last on Rialto Theatre’s agenda for November is a musical evening with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra which will present the Premiere 3 concert on November 28. Under the masterful baton of Zoe Zeniodi, the orchestra will present four exciting works composed by masters recognised as young geniuses, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Frédéric Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn, bringing a night of epic classical music.
