Located at the intersection of Rue des Trevires and Rue des Romains in the Bonnevoie district, Nostos has been open since Saturday 12 April. Run by three friends from the island of Mykonos, Nostos aims to offer fresh and authentic Greek food in a convivial atmosphere, explain Andreas and Spiros, who handle the service side.
On the list of starters: spicy whipped cheese (tyrokafteri) with grilled Florina peppers; white fish roe dip (taramosalata) with lime; or roasted eggplant spread (melizanosalata) with fresh herbs, Florina peppers and walnuts. The main dishes feature plenty of seafood–calamari, sea bream, grilled shrimp or grilled octopus, for example–along with chicken and lamb. Nostos also offers a daily dish: on the day Paperjam visited, we tried the youvetsi (a sort of Greek orzo) served with chicken, mushrooms and parsley, accompanied by chunks of crunchy bread. Drink of choice: a refreshing pink grapefruit soda (a list of wine and beer is also available).
Starters run from €9 to €20, main dishes cost €26 to €36, a dish of the day for €20 is offered during lunchtime, desserts are around €10. But it’s well worth the price: the food is delicious and the portions are very generous (I tend to get peckish in the afternoon, but this time, I was so satisfied that I actually skipped dinner). Treat yourself to one of the homemade desserts: I’d recommend the karidopita, a traditional Greek walnut cake imbibed with syrup and cardamom, served with chocolate sauce, vanilla ice cream and hazelnut granola. Next time, I plan to try the portokalopita–Greek orange cake with white chocolate cream.
The staff members are friendly; wood accents contribute to the warm and cozy atmosphere; there’s a small bar to the left of the door as you enter; upbeat music plays quietly in the background. The room is not overly large (with capacity for around 40 guests at closely-spaced tables), and plenty of natural light flows into the dining room thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. A terrace that wraps around the corner of the restaurant promises to be pleasant when the sun (finally) returns.
“We don’t have social media for the moment, but slowly, the restaurant is getting busy,” says Andreas, who’s previously worked in the restaurant industry and has lived in Luxembourg for seven years. “The restaurant should be a place where you eat and you bring your friends,” he adds. “We hope to bring the sun and the sea and the tastes of the Mediterranean region.”
