Vasiliki ‘Bessie’ Dascoulias 1930-2024 | News, Sports, Jobs

WARREN — Vasiliki “Bessie” Kapolis Dascoulias, 94, passed away peacefully Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, after a brief illness.

Bessie was born on March 27, 1930, in Cortland, to Theofani and Athanasia Ioannou Kapolis.

For most of her professional life, Bessie worked at American Welding, from which she retired. Bessie was a lifelong member of St. Demetrios Church, the Yasou and the senior citizens clubs.

On Nov. 9, 1952, Bessie married Peter “Pete” J. Dascoulias and their family grew as they welcomed children John, Frank and Christina. After retirement, Bessie and Pete enjoyed traveling together, especially their winters spent on Anna Maria Island, Florida, each year. They created wonderful memories with their entire family, until Pete’s death in 2005.

As Bessie advanced in age, she refused to slow down; she stayed sharp by continuing her annual Florida trips, watching “Wheel of Fortune,” playing countless word games and completing numerous crossword puzzles, reading books late into the night and engaging in spirited games of Rummikub with her family and Florida friends.

Bessie is survived by her children, John Dascoulias and husband, Clifford Pugh, Frank Dascoulias, and Christina Gania and husband, Tim; grandchildren, Greg Gania and wife, Meagan, Alexa Nikolaides and husband, Pantelis, Adonis Dascoulias, and Melena Dascoulias and husband, Lawrence Zarlengo; great-grandchildren, Dimitri and Vasiliki Nikolaides; sister-in-law, Christina K. Kapolis, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her brother, Nick T. Kapolis, and sisters, Marina Barges and Esther Zarafonitis.

She will be greatly missed by her children; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and extended family and countless friends, who loved her like family. Her legacy will live on through stories and her Greek recipes for years to come.

Family and friends may visit and pay tribute to Bessie from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 429 High St. NE, Warren, OH 44481, where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with Rev. Constantine Valantasis presiding.

Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
