Upcoming seminar to highlight Theodorakis’ work in shaping the Greek art-folk song

The work of Mikis Theodorakis and his contribution in the shaping of the Greek art-folk song is set to be the subject of an informative talk hosted by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

The lecture will consider musicological, cultural and social issues in Greek popular music through the lens of Mikis Theodorakis, with it particularly assessing the spectrum of lament.

It fittingly slots into the many events that will be held on the legendary Greek composer throughout 2025, which marks 100 years from his birth.

The talk will be given online on Thursday 27 March at 7pm via Facebook and YouTube by Dr Maria Athanasiou, a lecturer at Newcastle University and a researcher at Durham University.

The UK-based academic will delve deep into Theodorakis’ work, analysing the stylistic and formal features as well as the differences in his music’s morphological structures while also looking into the social and cultural influences.

The seminar, which coincides with Theodorakis year (as declared by the Greek Ministry of Culture), will also address questions of aesthetics and look deeper into the expressions of grief through Greek texts and music.

The event aims to highlight the universal human experience of sorrow and empathy that is created by the presentation and sharing of culturally specific expressions of grief, using Mikis Theodorakis as a focus.
