Turkey has voiced strong opposition to a planned subsea electricity cable project being advanced by Greece, Cyprus, and Israel, calling it a “unilateral fait accompli” that will not be tolerated, according to security sources cited by pro-government daily Turkiye.
Turkish diplomatic and military officials argue the cable project infringes upon international maritime law and breaches the principles governing maritime jurisdictions. The sources warned that the planned works proceed without regional consensus and challenge unresolved maritime boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean.
In response, Ankara is expected to dispatch research vessels back into international waters east of the Greek islands of Kasos and Karpathos, in a move interpreted as part of Turkey’s broader countermeasures.
“The unilateral steps taken by Greece are provocative, especially given that the delimitation of the continental shelf and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean has yet to be agreed upon,” the report said, adding that Turkey has already raised its objections through international forums, referencing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
