Tsipras political memoir imminent amid talk of comeback

A memoir by former prime minister and ex-leader of the leftist SYRIZA party Alexis Tsipras, offering his own account of Greece’s political and economic turbulence during his time in power, is set to be published by early December, his political office has announced.

The book, completed in the past few days, serves as a testimony of himself as a protagonist of the critical events of one of the most turbulent periods in post-dictatorship Greek history, his aides noted in a statement.

In eleven chapters, Tsipras – who served as prime minister from 2015 to 2019 and is widely believed to be planning a political comeback – describes and reveals behind-the-scenes details of the Greek debt-crisis negotiations, until-now undisclosed conversations with foreign leaders, factors that shaped his decision on the 2015 bailout referendum, as well as the fraught path that followed the agreement for the country’s exit from the bailout-linked memoranda in the summer of 2018, marking the official end of the country’s third international bailout program.

According to his office, Tsipras does not avoid but rather embraces a critical and self-critical evaluation of his key choices throughout this journey. The book also addresses post-PM developments between 2019 and 2023, including his resignation as SYRIZA leader after two snap electoral defeats that year, the causes of those losses, and the internal party crisis that followed.

Tsipras also sets out what he calls his personal “compass,” outlining his vision for the future of the Left, the progressive movement, and Greece.

The book will be released by Gutenberg Publications and is expected on bookstore shelves by early December.
