The Greek Ministry of Civil Protection has issued advice for Santorini (Thira), Anafi, Ios and Amorgos, after the increased seismic activity near the islands. As a result schools across Greece will remain closed today, Monday, February 3.
They have advised that certain areas be avoided including the ports of Amoudi, Armeni, Korfos and Old Port (Paleos Limenas) in the area of Fira. Large indoor gatherings are advised to be avoided as well as old or abandoned buildings.
When travelling around the islands it is advised to ensure that you take safe routes, especially in areas that have a high risk of landslide. With tremors still possible across the islands, the Ministry advises: “In case of a strong tremor, people should immediately depart coastal areas. If you are in the affected areas, you should follow the advice of the local authorities.”
The UK Government declares that “there is a risk of earthquakes and earth tremors” in Greece and that you should:
- familiarise yourself with safety procedures in the event of an earthquake
- follow advice given by the local authorities
- call the Greek emergency services on 112 if you are in immediate danger
As well as tremors, flooding is affecting some regions across Greece. The UK Government website reads: “Adverse weather conditions, including floods, are affecting some regions. The situation can change quickly. Follow ‘112 Greece’ on X for official updates.”
If you are travelling to Greece, it is not just natural disasters that you should be wary of as terrorist attacks are also likely to happen. The government says: “Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Greece. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals.
“There have been several attacks involving explosives and automatic weapons against Greek institutions, shopping malls, banks, media offices, diplomatic premises and the police.” For further information and travel advice visit the UK Government website here.
